Glass Rolling Pin

The rolling pin was previously broken 12 years before, had been restored, and then broke again. The new breaks seemed to occur due to glue fatigue or failure. Roughly a third of the rolling pin was broken off, and shattered into about a dozen pieces. The project included multiple loose pieces still attached to the main broken-off section, and to the section that was still on the stand. The stand originally made for the item was problematic and didn’t offer ample support. There was only one pressure point, in the middle, near the site of the original break. The structure just collapsed in the middle, between the supported points, while the other part was never broken. In order to restore the piece, we cleaned it, assembled it dry, and slowly glued each piece to keep the angle of the cylinder as we went. We had to disassemble a lot of what was previously restored because it was unstable, removing the old glue and replacing it. After we reached a stable point, we coated the glass from inside, under the repairs, with a thin layer of epoxy to stabilize the structure. We fabricated a new stand to provide additional support.
